Semrush Review: Features & Detailed Overview – Worth it?

Are you planning to buy Semrush for search engine optimization (SEO) or digital marketing research/analysis? In this hands-on review of SEMrush, I’ll help you decide whether Semrush is ideal in this Semrush review.

I’ll go through each feature in detail and determine which aspects of SEMrush make it a feasible option for specific organizations.

Since Semrush’s entry-level subscription is just $100 per month, I’ll also discuss if SEMrush is a good investment for your business. It’s costly, but it may reveal the secrets to significantly increasing your profits.

What is Semrush?

Oleg Shchegolev and Dmitri Melnikov launched Semrush, a SaaS tool for tracking SEO and advertising. What began in 2008 as a software solution has developed into a market-leading SEO tool utilized by over seven million marketers.Β

Semrush offers search engine optimization (SEO) solutions, pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, competitive analysis, content marketing, and social media management.

Semrush Features

Semrush includes over 45 features, making it one of the most sophisticated solutions for SEO software. Not just for SEO professionals, it has its utility for multiple areas of interest.

Mentioned below are some of its most relevant use cases

  • Keyword Research
  • On-Page SEO
  • Competitor Analysis
  • Content Marketing
  • Local SEO
  • Rank Tracking
  • Social Media Management
  • Link building
  • Competitor SEO Analysis
  • Content creation and distribution
  • Content Optimization
  • Content Marketing Analysis
  • Market Analysis
  • Paid Advertising
  • Competitor PR Marketing
  • PPC Keyword Research
  • Website Monetization

However, most of these tools are organized around a few essential characteristics that increase your website’s visibility and rank higher in search engines.

You need a tool like Semrush to grow your business online. Until you don’t have a bird-eye view of how your website performs on the world wide web, you can’t make full-proof business strategies.

Competitive research

A popular SEO strategy is to research how your competitors rank on Google and see what you can do to compete.

Fortunately, Semrush’s bread and butter is their domain analysis tool and ability to assist you with authentic competitor research.

With the domain overview tool, you can delve deep into a website’s performance. However, at a look, you obtain measures such as:

  • Domain’s Authority Score.
  • Organic search traffic and traffic trends in general.
  • Pay-per-click and display advertising traffic.
  • The number of backlinks, their type, the most common anchors, and the percentage of follow vs nofollow links.
  • Country-by-country traffic share.
  • Organic keywords and distribution of keyword positions.
  • Competitors for organic and paid keywords.

However, this is only the beginning. Each tab delves further into the data, and SEMrush covers numerous facets of a domain.

Traffic Analytics

This tool allows you to analyze a domain’s traffic numbers and compare them to three competitors. The report contains the following information:

  • Visits.
  • Unique visitors.
  • Per visit, pages.
  • The average duration of a visit.
  • Rate of bounce.

Additionally, this data is segmented by device and subdomain.

Organic Research

That’s the place where you can not only see how much traffic a website gets monthly but also see the historical trend of overall website traffic.

Additionally, the Organic Research view displays the number of keywords, current monthly traffic, and their value (in terms of money).

Organic research, in my opinion, is where Semrush shines.

Apart from generating a comprehensive list of organic keywords for which a website ranks, Semrush additionally displays the following:

  • The current position of a term and the percentage of traffic it generates for a website.
  • Scores that are tough to obtain.
  • The volume of keywords.
  • Cost per click on average (CPC).
  • Features in the SERPs, such as a knowledge panel, reviews, or video carousel.

Semrush also displays keyword position changes, with a particular emphasis on the top position changes tab.

This category categorizes changes in keyword positions as gaining, losing, improving, or declining.

Spying on competitors is an excellent technique to determine their ranking flaws or areas for improvement.

Keyword Gaps

This tool lets you compare the organic and paid positions of up to five URLs, domains, or subdomains.

If you wish to compare your website’s ranks to those of your competitors, this tool saves you time and identifies missed ranking chances.

These keyword categories are displayed in detail by the Keyword Gap tool:

  • Shared β€” Keywords that all sites rank for.
  • Missing β€” Key phrases your competitors rank for that you don’t.
  • Weak β€” Keywords for which you rank lower than all of your competitors.
  • Strong β€” Keywords that rank highest for your domain.
  • Untapped β€” Keywords where your domain does not rank, but at least one of your competitors does.
  • Unique β€” Keywords that you are the only one ranking for.

Having a “Top Opportunities for” tab is also beneficial to highlight keywords around which you can create content to overtake your competitors.

Backlink Gap

The Backlink Gap tool is similar to the Keyword Gap tool, except that it compares a website’s backlinks to four competitors.

One precious measure in this tool is the “Best” backlink category, which identifies websites that link to your competitors’ websites but not yours.

Additionally, a “weak” backlink section shows domains that link to your website less frequently than your competitors.

If you’re looking to start building links, these two categories are excellent places to start.

Keyword Research

Semrush’s competitive research tools incorporate keyword data. However, you can also conduct a keyword search based on a root domain or keyword concept.

To begin, the “Keyword Overview” tool provides a picture of a specific keyword that contains the following:

  • The volume of searches in a specific country and globally.
  • The score for keyword difficulty.
  • CPC (cost per click) average and a paid competition score.
  • A graph depicting the evolution of keyword interest.
  • A list of keyword variations, related terms, and frequently asked questions.

In general, if you’ve used Ahrefs’ keyword research tool, this will feel similar. The primary distinction is that Ahrefs has a more aesthetically pleasing user interface and also breaks out the number of clicks you may expect if you rank for a term.

In comparison, Semrush provides valuable information such as historical search patterns and combines Google Ads content and advertising analytics for keywords.

Semrush is the superior option if you work in advertising. Besides, selecting Ahrefs or Semrush for keyword research is primarily a matter of personal preference.

Keyword Magic Tool

Although the Keyword Overview tool is a convenient method for keyword research, the Keyword Magic Tool is one of my favorite Semrush products.

It’s a phrase I frequently use while deciding what article to write.

To begin, type in a phrase or keyword into this tool. After that, Semrush presents search terms based on criteria such as:

  • Broad Match Keywords – Any variation of your base phrase or keyword.
  • Phrase Match Keywords – Matches your base keywords or phrases in different orders.
  • Exact Match Keywords – Identifies the exact phrase or keyword you are targeting.
  • Questions – Questions relating to your base keyword.
  • Related – Keywords that are related to your main keyword or phrase.

Search volume, search trend, difficulty, cost-per-click, and SERP characteristics are all included in the data. Additionally, a keyword percent score indicates the degree to which keywords are comparable to your essential term or phrase.

On the sidebar, keyword categories are sorted by the total number of searches or search volume. This is comparable to Surfer’s content planning tool, which clusters related keywords.

However, I prefer the Keyword Magic Tool due to its filtering capabilities. You can specify minimum search volumes or use advanced filters to specify ranges for the following:

  • Word count.
  • SERP results.
  • Competition score.
  • The search engine results page has features such as a knowledge panel, reviews, local pick, and instant answers.

The word count filter is your buddy if you’re looking for an easy way to discover low-competition, long-tail keywords. In this example, I’ve configured the filter to include keywords with a minimum of eight words and to exclude those with a low competitiveness score.

Link Building

As with other categories, Semrush’s Backlink Analytics tool enables you to begin backlink analysis at a broad level. Simply input a domain name to view a breakdown of the following:

  • Domains that are referred to.
  • Count of backlinks and proportion of followers who follow or do not follow.
  • A score of authority.
  • The best anchors for backlinks.
  • Referring domains are classified according to their categories.
  • Backlinks to the top pages.

A website can be compared to up to four other competitors. Semrush keeps track of new and lost backlinks, which is beneficial for tracking your overall link-building efforts and contacting webmasters to recover lost backlinks.

Additionally, there is a Backlink Audit tool, which offers additional information about a given domain and details on whether any links have been lost or broken:

However, I will state that in terms of genuine outreach for link development. Ahrefs’ content explorer is significantly easier when locating websites to pitch guest posts to.

When you enter a term, Ahrefs delivers a list of articles that are relevant to the subject. You can immediately check the domain’s strength, backlinks, and traffic value. Additionally, you may add a broken pages filter to identify 404 pages or pages with broken links for pitching.

Rank Tracker

SEO is a never-ending war with competition. As a result, simply ranking well is insufficient: you must also analyze how your keyword positions change over time.

Semush’s position tracking tool enables you to monitor the following domains:

  • A visibility score is calculated using current keyword rankings and estimated click-through rates.
  • The top 100 keywords and whether they are increasing, constant, or decreasing in popularity.
  • Pages that are increasing in popularity or decreasing in popularity.

Additionally, a cannibalization analysis indicates whether your site contains overlapping material where keywords may compete with one another. This functionality is only available on the Guru and Business plans; more price information may be found in the pricing section.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO is critical to the success of any SEO campaign.

To begin, let me state that I use Surfer for on-page SEO. This is because Surfer is the quickest way to research SERP results to determine your competitor’s rank and what you need to do to compete.

Furthermore, Semrush’s technical SEO features frequently feel superfluous.

For instance, the site audit tool enables you to crawl a website for items such as:

  • Broken pages.
  • Distribution of internal links.
  • The essentials of the web and the page’s speed.
  • Markup-enabled pages, such as or Twitter cards.

However, if you conduct an audit on a large site, you will invariably see hundreds or thousands of problems regarding page speed and missing internal linking opportunities:

Is this of assistance?

To determine if performance is an issue, you can run Google PageSpeed Insights or just assess your website as a user. Additionally, I like Ahrefs’ site audit tool because the user interface is much easier to navigate and scan.

The on-page SEO analyzer is only marginally more useful.

Semrush delivers keyword suggestions for the top pages to optimize once you enter a domain. Additionally, it compares your material to Google’s top ten pages on various parameters, including the number of words, the referring domain, and readability.

This is nothing near as simple to use as Surfer SEO. Additionally, Surfer SEO evaluates over 500 ranking criteria, so you won’t have to wade through layers of reports to locate the information you need.

Content Marketing Research

Semrush’s final and most crucial element is its content marketing toolbox.

Once again, this is comparable to the Surfer SEO content planner, which assists you in developing a content marketing strategy centered on a particular topic.

To begin, enter a subject or keyword. Semrush then populates your entry with subtopics, headlines, and questions. If you publish a post about a specific term, Semrush can also generate a content template based on the top SERP results.

I still prefer Surfer and find Semrush’s user interface to be a little clumsy. It almost feels as though there are too many tool categories when they might all be combined into a more intuitive UI.

Semrush’s strength, in any event, lies in its organic and keyword research capabilities. I’d recommend skipping it for content marketing.

Other Features

  • Brand Mentions – Keep track of any mentions your brand receives on the web, forums, Instagram, and Twitter.
  • Post Tracking – Track backlinks, social sharing, and keyword ranking for specific articles.
  • Semrush Sensor – Get alerts about algorithm changes and SERP volatility.
  • Advertising Research – Analyze PPC and display advertising metrics for any website, find out how much PPC keywords cost, and view competitor ads.
  • Social Media Dashboard (Beta) – Plan posts for social media, view engagement reports to see when and what your competitors are posting.
  • Client Management – Semrush has a wide range of reports and a central performance dashboard to assist agencies with client management.

Following a seven-day trial period, you will be charged, and the amount will be deducted from your credit card.

You will receive an additional seven days as part of the money-back promise.

This is essentially pointless, and you will gain no benefit from it. However, it is a lifetime-free plan if you choose to keep it.

They occasionally send long-term customers offers and discounts if they realize you haven’t utilized their services in an extended period.

Yes, if you compare the amount to what you receive in the Initial package for the same number, it is somewhat more, but you will not require as many.

Thus, you are essentially performing a top-up recharge for the Semrush tool. This is a very useful feature.

Semrush Pricing Plans

Semrush offers three different pricing tiers to accommodate the demands of all users. The following are the three plans:

Semrush Pricing Plan

Semrush Pro Plan- At $119.95 per month

The Semrush Pro package is ideal for novices who want to learn how to find keywords, analyze backlinks, and track keywords. However, the design lacks certain aspects, such as historical data analysis. However, it would be excellent for novices.

Semrush Guru Plan- At $229.95 per monthΒ

Guru is a good choice for newcomers, intermediate, and advanced users. With the plan, customers can conduct keyword searches for up to 15 projects and track up to 500 keywords simultaneously. Additionally, you can perform backlink analytics and keyword tracking.

Business Plans- At $449 per monthΒ

The business model benefits corporations because it requires them to manage 40 projects concurrently. Users can track up to 5000 keywords simultaneously and leverage additional technologies.

Keynote: – If you are satisfied with the programs and require bulk research, the annual subscription is the best option. On yearly plans, you can save up to 17% more.

Customer support

Given the complexity of SEO tools like Semrush, the availability and format of customer help is a critical factor for prospective consumers.

The good news is that Semrush provides customer service by phone, email, and chat. This stands in stark contrast to competitor products, not all of which include phone assistance (Moz and Majestic do not even have live chat help).

And, unlike other SaaS solutions, Semrush publicly displays its contact information – a help chatbox is visible at the bottom of each page, and a phone number is widely shown in the website’s footer.

There is no tedious search of our support pages before we show you a phone number process – assistance is immediate.

Pros & Cons of Semrush

  • Easy to use
  • Quick Domain Overview gets you the big picture of a website’s authority and its organic traffic
  • Organic traffic history and the data is pretty much accurate
  • Compared to Ahrefs, Semrush is the cheaper option and gets more data
  • More insights on the technical SEO, off-page SEO, and PPC data
  • Not just organic, you can also explore the PPC and social traffic data
  • 30-days free trial available

  • Costly for starters

Semrush Review: My Recommendation

Semrush is a good choice if you’re looking for a sophisticated tool for competitor analysis and keyword research.

This software includes everything a small or medium-sized online operation needs to monitor competitors, track rankings, and identify content and backlink holes to exploit.

Semrush’s content marketing research tool falls short. Additionally, the user interface needs some adjustments.

This is, however, the essence of software that attempts to do everything. Finally, if you want to use only one SEO software suite and limit your tool list to a minimum, Semrush provides all you require.
